Women in Muralism:

The Invisible Hands in Mexican Art

Duration

Meeting Point

Activity Level

3.5 Hours

Centro Histórico (Downtown CDMX)

Beginner to Medium

Every country has its signature artistic movement. France has Impressionism, Germany has Expressionism, and Mexico, of course, has Muralism.

If you’ve ever walked through the streets of Mexico City, you’ve seen the grand scale of art tied to activism. But when we talk about Muralism, the conversation usually stops at “The Big Three”: Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco. If we talk about other Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo usually comes to mind, perhaps Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo for the art enthusiasts.

But what happened to the women who were actually on the scaffolds? The ones whose art was painted over, ignored, or credited to their male counterparts? Who made Diego Rivera king, and at what cost?

This isn’t a polished museum tour. This is a boots-on-the-ground exploration of the streets, markets, and sometimes unconventional buildings of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. We are here to bridge the gap and summon the presence of the women who were erased from the narrative.

Highlights:
  • We’ll talk about the fierce feminist activist Aurora Reyes, the talented Rina Lazo and many other rebels who challenged the status quo.
  • We’ll walk past the grand murals of “The Big Three.” Not by choice, but because they occupy almost every wall. We’ll use them as a backdrop to tell the stories of the women who were standing right next to them, unappreciated.
  • Through newspaper archives, interactive spots, and the art itself, we’ll bring insight into their lives, their work, and their powerful activism.
